Bajua, a poverty-stricken township surrounded by rivers, houses millions of people without a touch of modernity. We mean basic needs – “food, clothing, shelter, medical care, education.” Unbelievable fact that they lack the most essential ingredient to sustain life – “drinking water”. The water here is so salty that it is not fit for consumption. Tubewell water is very salty, not edible. Some people here filter and drink the smelly pond water, but it is not completely odor free. Some capture rainwater for year-round use. When these opportunities are over, they have to buy drinking water from different companies at two taka per liter. Where it is difficult for them to eat dal and rice for two times in a day. their helpless condition to buy drinking water is conceivable. During the summer season, with very hot temperatures, thirsty people cannot make short measure for drinking water. But they are doing it because of their poverty.
Then talking about treatment. There is no hospital nearby. If they are very sick, they have to go to Khulna city for treatment. Khulna is far from Bajua. Road conditions are so bad that it is almost impossible to take any critical patient for treatment. Apart from the problem of broken roads, three rivers have to be crossed to reach Khulna Hospital. One of these rivers has a bridge, the other two rivers do not have bridge and you have to rely on ferries or boats for transportation. After going there once, we saw that for some reason the ferry was closed for 4/5 hours, how to save a critical patient?
We who come from outside and use air conditioners for comfort, can’t drink without mineral water, juice, want delicious food on the dining table, want certain brand of clothes, go to famous and expensive hospitals abroad for minor ailments – this is us and the people of Bajua village – we People of the same world. People are some privileged and some disadvantaged just because of birth. We are the best creatures of Almighty .We have conscience, feelings, love. The humanity that lives in us never finds peace in the suffering of others and can’t think only of its own happiness. Let us stand by them as best we can from every position.
